MAYOR CHUCK CHIARELLO

NOTES OF INTEREST

Ø      Mayor Chuck Chiarello has been instrumental in many successful projects in Buena Vista Township.  Completed a five-year dream to bring the New Jersey State Police Troop A Headquarters and Barracks to his community.  The 10 million-dollar, 59,000 square foot building officially opened on November 8, 1996 on NJ Route 54.

Ø      Mayor Chiarello has brought in millions of dollars in grants, paved over 100 miles of roads in the past years and worked on numerous projects such as the Martin Luther King Community Center and the raising of $10,000.00 to light the Buena Braves football field.  He helped establish the Veterans Pavilion and Court of Honor Veterans Memorial at Michael Debbi Park in Richland.  The memorial is highlighted by a huge lighted stone and 5,000 paving stones.

Ø      Mayor Chuck Chiarello was recruited to serve on multiple New Jersey State League of Municipalities projects.

1.  The School Funding Committee is seeking ways to offer property tax relief to New Jersey homeowners while maintaining a quality education at the standards we expect.

 2.  Mayor Chiarello volunteerism chaired a forum that was held in Atlantic City on November 21, 1996 at the Annual League conference.  The forum was titled "Reversing the Trend in Declining Volunteerism" and addressed this important issue for volunteer firefighters and rescue squad members.  Less volunteers means more taxes to replace them.  How do we maintain volunteers and the proper levels of service required?  On May 15, 1997, Mayor Chiarello chaired a second forum on the subject entitled, "Enhancing Volunteerism in Municipalities" in Woodbridge.

Ø      Mayor Chiarello was elected as the first Chairman of the Pinelands Municipal Council in February 1996.  Mayor Chiarello and other Mayors took the initiative to revive this inactive council that had existed since 1980.  The council is made up of Mayors or designees from all 53 towns within the Pinelands area.  The council has opened a new line of communication between the Pinelands Commission and the local municipalities.  Mayor Chiarello has served six terms as Chairman of the Council and three terms as Vice Chairman.

Ø      Mayor Chiarello is an advocate for our region and for South Jersey.  He has spoken out on telephone area code changes that will impact our state.  As a result, legislation has been introduced that will prevent phone companies from dividing communities between area codes or dual area codes that overlap creating confusion.  Mayor Chiarello has made a proposal for a parking "interceptor" project that would take 10,000 cars or more per day off Atlantic County highways and out of Atlantic City to improve traffic flow and the quality of life.  Mayor Chiarello has set a goal to bring Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) funding to areas in the Greater Atlantic City Metropolitan Area that need financial support for the growth Atlantic City has brought (Resolution No. 96‑226) .  In 1995:  Mayor Chiarello spoke out against the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) and their plans to go into the bus parking lot business ‑ a venture that could be better served by the private sector.  He has also criticized the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) for careless spending and costly lawsuits.

Ø      In 1996 Chuck ran on the Democratic ticket for Atlantic County Freeholder‑at‑Large.  He narrowly lost the election by 888 votes receiving a total of 36,299 votes.  Chuck more than doubled the number of votes received from his 1995 run for Atlantic County Executive.

PERSONAL

Ø      Chuck lives with his wife Cheryl (DeRosa) in the Milmay section of Buena Vista Township.  He came to the area when he was three years old after his parents moved to Atlantic City from New York City.  His parents built a home in Absecon and operated Russ Miller Record Shops for 25 years.  He is currently employed by the South Jersey Transportation Authority and is the Airport Facilities Planning Manager.

Ø      Chiarello was an independent sales representative of audio, video and data media products.  His business experience dates back to his childhood where he worked his way through the family record business.

Ø      Chuck was named a Director in the (1996) newly formed Township of Hamilton Lions Club.

Ø      A never-ending commitment to quality, caring and dedication to any job or issue Chuck takes on is evident.
