An Environmental Tour of the Watersheds of Buena Vista Township

Location: Buena Vista Township Watershed, streams and lakes at various road crossings, Cedar Lake upstream of dam along south bank.

Weather: Sunny, low 80's, low humidity, light wind.

Observations: At Cedar Lake upstream of dam, atv trail along left bank, many ruts and erosion along trail and adjacent wetlands, 100's of small Fowler's toad all along lake and wetlands 6 large Fowler's toads, 10+ green frogs, 20+ southern leopard frogs, 2 bullfrogs, 1 northern water snake, 1 killdeer, many large, medium and small dragonflies, many whirligig beetles on lake, many fish swirls in water, 5 sunfish nests along banks near dam, 5 New Jersey chorus frogs, 5 damsel flies, 2 towhees, 1 turkey vultures, 2 red bellied turtles, 2 pine warblers, small kinds on insects on waters surface. Many large and small phragmites populations along left bank, pitch pine, black jack oak, willow oak, white oak, leather leaf, swamp azalea, gray birch, button bush, sweet gum, red maple, Atlantic white cedar, braken fern, mountain laurel, high bush blueberry, 1 adult mallard with 8 ducklings.

Weather: Sunny, high 80's very hazy and  humid, light wind.

Observations: At pond at Ardsley Terrace and Cannon Range Road, much vegetation in pond, water very clear, 20+ green and southern leopard frogs, 2 bull frogs, 1 catbird, 2 chipping sparrows, 1 great blue heron, many dragon flies, Yellow eye grass, Canada rush, spatulate leaf sundew, yellow eyed grass, Nuttal's lobelia, American bur-reed, golden hedge hyssop, steeplebush, upright bartonia, Nuttal's lobelia, and shrubby and Canada St. Johnswort common in and along banks of pond.  Rough and sweet goldenrod, Queen Anne' lace, field thistle, field milkweed common along Cannon Road and pond.  Pitch pine, high bush blueberry, mountain and sheep laurel, red maple, sweet gum, bracken fern, inkberry, gray birch, common cat briar, black huckle berry, sweet fern, wild indigo, St. Andrews cross, and white and black oak common in uplands around pond.

Weather: Sunny, clear, low 80's, light wind.

Observations: Water clear, normal level, deep wetlands on either side of stream, 1 green heron, 1 gold finch, 2 red winged black birds, 6 gray catbirds, 1 turkey vulture, 2 chain pickerel, 1 crow, 1 sunfish, many damsel and dragon flies, and whirly gig beetles, 2 morning dove, 1 common yellow throat, 2 mallard ducks, 1 blue jay, 1 green frog, and 2 wood ducks.

Red maple, smooth alder, sweet pepperbush, wither rod, leather leaf, swamp azalea, fetterbush, dodder, blue flag, marsh, cinnamon, and royal fern, pickerelweed, fragrant water lily, swamp loose strife, marsh St. Johnswort, button bush, seed box, and Pine Barrens bonset, common in wetlands along stream. 10+ Pine barrens boneset population along stream. Pitch pine, willow, white and black oak, and phragmites common in uplands in quarry area.
