Helpful Information During Crisis

By The Daily Journal, 3/21/03

Create a disaster plan

·  Meet with your family. Discuss why you need to prepare for disaster. Explain the dangers but plan to share the responsibilities.

·  Pick two places to meet. One should be right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency. The other should be outside your neighborhood in case you can't return home.

·  Make sure kids know their home address and phone number.

·  Ask an out-of-state friend to be your family contact. After a local disaster, it's often easier to call long distance. Other family members should call this person and tell them where they are. Everyone must know the contact's phone number.

·  Discuss what you'll need should you have to evacuate. Plan how to take care of your pets.

Disaster supply kit

·  Water -- Store one gallon of water per person per day. Have purifying agents available. Store water in thoroughly washed plastic, fiberglass or enamel-lined metal containers. Never use a container that has held toxic substances.

·  Food -- Store a three-day supply of non-perishable food per person. Include canned meats, fruits and vegetables, soup, powdered or canned milk, sugar cookies, hard candy, sugar, salt and pepper, juice, vitamins, beef jerky, peanut butter, nuts and trail mix.

·  First aid -- Include bandages, gauze pads, scissors, needles, tweezers, a bar of soap, moist towelettes, a nonbreakable thermometer and latex gloves. Also include aspirin, pain relievers, antacids, laxatives, eye wash, hydrogen peroxide and all prescription medications.

·  Clothing and bedding -- Include sturdy shoes or work boots, blankets, sleeping bags, thermal underwear, rain gear, hats, gloves and sunglasses.

·  Tools -- Include plastic cups and utensils, plastic sheeting, tape, pencils and pens, pliers, a compass, matches and a shut-off wrench.

·  Emergency supplies -- Include signal flares, fire extinguishers, cash or traveler's checks, and battery-operated radios.

Other ways to prepare

·  Post emergency telephone numbers by every phone. Include fire, police, ambulance, etc.

·  Teach children how and when to call 911 or your local emergency medical personnel.

·  Make sure family members know CPR and other first aid techniques.

·  Show each family member how and when to turn off the main water, gas and electricity switches.

·  Teach each family member how to use a fire extinguisher. Show them where they're kept.

·  Determine the best escape routes from your home. Find two ways out of each room.

·  Conduct emergency evacuation drills.

 PRESS RELEASE

Polling District Added in Buena Vista Township

The Township Committee is very pleased to announce that after many years of trying, an additional polling district has been added in Buena Vista Township.  Residents of Cranberry Run, a 296 unit mobile home community, will now have their own polling district.  The Township is proud to have been able to assist these residents.

On December 10, 2001, Township Clerk LaVerne Gunter at the request of the Township Committee and Committeewoman Sue Barber wrote a letter to the Atlantic County Board of Elections to support the establishment of Cranberry Run as a separate polling district.  The Atlantic County Board of Elections, at their March 25, 2002 meeting, reviewed and approved the new polling location.  The Township Committee reviewed the redistricting at their April 1, 2002 meeting and accepted the new district.  It will be called District 6.

The Township Clerk LaVerne Gunter and Administrator Ron Trebing made an inspection of the Community Center at Cranberry Run, and determined that the Community Center met all the requirements to serve as a polling place.

Additionally, the Township Clerk has reviewed all the streets to be included in District 6 and submitted them to the Atlantic County Board of Elections for their review.  District 6 will include all streets in Cranberry Run and the Township’s side of Wheat Road from Tuckahoe Road to Lincoln Avenue.

Committeewoman Sue Barber has received numerous requests in the past year for the polling location.  “We had to wait for the new election cycle to start in 2002 so the Board of Elections could review the request” Barber stated.

“Many attempts have been made to establish a polling location at Cranberry Run - this time the Board of Elections saw fit to approve it and we are very pleased”, added Mayor Chuck Chiarello.
