LINWOOD — Through the Pascale Sykes Foundation’s South Jersey Initiative, more than $524,000 was donated at the Atlantic County Women’s Center here Wednesday to a group of nonprofit organizations in Atlantic County to financially support the improvement of child well-being. The funding will specifically finance the Father’s Care Network and the Western Atlantic Parent Family Support Center. “It’s not a quick fix,” Fran Sykes, president of the foundation, said of its mission. The foundation’s mission revolves around the importance of two adults being present at home when raising children. This is the first year the Monmouth County-based foundation is distributing funds in Atlantic, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties. By expanding to South Jersey, the foundation has committed to 10 years of funding for the region. Sykes said Atlantic County was chosen as a funding recipient because it ranked 19 of 21 New Jersey counties in the 2011 Kids Count data. Published by Advocated for Children of New Jersey annually, the survey compares counties on 15 measures including child poverty, health, safety and education The only South Jersey county to perform worse was Cumberland County. “The data also show 17 percent of children in Atlantic County live below the federal poverty line,” reads a press release announcing the funding. The Father’s Care Network focuses on fatherhood and relationships within the family. The network received $275,000. The Atlantic County Women’s Center, Youth Advocate Programs Inc., Girl Scouts of Central & Southern New Jersey, Career Opportunity Development, Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office and the Atlantic County Jail are working with the Father’s Care Network. The Western Atlantic Parent Family Support Center received $249,553 and supports two family centers. They are located at the Martin Luther King Center in Newtonville section of Buena Vista Township and in the Mizpah Inland Human Services’ Alfred R. Lundy Senior Community Center. Collaborating agencies with the Family Support Center include the Family Service Association, Atlantic Human Resources, Richland First Baptist Church, Mizpah Inland Human Services, Atlantic Cape Family Support Organization, CASA for Children of Atlantic & Cape May Counties, Literacy Volunteers Association Cape Atlantic, Money Management International and the Spanish Community Center. Atlantic County officials welcomed the funding, saying its programs are underfunded. “We need to invest in our dads,” said Claudia Ratzlaff, CEO of the Women’s Center. “We have young men growing up without knowing what it is to have a dad.” Cindy Herdman Ivins, CEO of the Family Service Association, said funding a program in the western section of the county will result in a stronger partnership between existing non-profits. “By no means are we going this alone,” she said.
