"The Teaching American History Program rightly emphasizes the importance of understanding our nation's history by allowing teachers to gain a deeper knowledge and in turn share it with their students," said US. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2, said in a press release announcing the grant award Wednesday. The Teaching American History Program is part of the No Child Left Behind Act. New Jersey has received 22 grants worth $16 million in the last four years. Other area districts that have received grants include Millville, which received $472,673 in 2006, and Greater Egg Harbor Regional, which received $493,215 in 2007. One report on the program released Wednesday showed that participating teachers increased their knowledge by 21 percent. The study by the American Institute for History Education tracked the results in three districts in New Jersey that use the Institute's professional development system. Students of teachers in their second year of the program scored 30 percent higher on a standardized history test than students in a comparison district.
