Why would DEP pollute Pinelands? 12/6/05 The state Department of Environmental Protection has purchased land in Monroe Township, Gloucester County, for the purpose of converting it to an off-road vehicle park. The fact that the DEP would convert public land in New Jersey's Pinelands to an ORV park is beyond belief. Is it not the mission of the DEP to protect our environment rather than to be a contributor to air, noise, soil and water pollution? Has the DEP conducted any studies to determine the effects of spilled gasoline on our ground water? A study by the California DEP estimates that, on average, one ounce of fuel is spilled during refueling with a gas can. It is well documented that MTBEs found in gasoline are a carcinogen. Is the DEP not concerned about adding cancer-causing contaminants to our groundwater? Until such time that the DEP can prove there will be no adverse effects to the environment, I ask that all work on this project be halted. RENE COLLINS Williamstown
