October 2002 By Joan Dickerson This past month public works employees cleaned the litter along our roadways. We have also held four different Clean Communities cleanups. Despite this our roadways are again full of litter. We would like to ask everyone to PLEASE DO NOT LITTER. Carry a litter bag in you vehicle to put trash in. Take your trash home or put the trash in receptacles at the place you buy your coffee or lunch. Don’t throw trash and litter our of your vehicle windows. It makes our roads unsightly. This past month we have graded all of our dirt roads and mowed all the sides of our streets and our parks. We also trimmed back some trees with the boom arm mower. We continue to keep our parks clean and we are repairing fences in the parks. Public Works employees have been busy building leaf boxes for our dump trucks in preparation for next months leaf collection. We are now cleaning up and doing maintenance on our salt and sand spreaders in preparation for the coming bad weather. Winter shows signs of coming early this year. We have done some pothole patching. We try to keep up with these as they appear. We have taken approximately 532 tires to the ACUA in the past month. Some of these were from our monthly drop-off most of these were picked up on the sides of roads or from small dumpings. There have been quite a few refrigerators and other appliances placed at the curb for collection the past few weeks. The ACUA has been trying to keep up with these. Since they cannot crush these in the packer trash trucks they usually come back at the end of their route and place them in the back of the truck. Because there has been so many lately they have had to send a flatbed truck out to collect these. This may not be the same day. Please be patient they will be collected. At our October drop-off we took in 5 yards of brush, approximately 405 lbs. of metal, 2 appliances, 3 bags of leaves, 212 gallons of used motor oil, 21 tires, 1 battery and a few cans, bottles and cardboard. We also still have wood chips available at the public works yard which residents can pick up on drop-off day. Some residents have taken advantage of this. There is no charge. You must bring your own container and shovel. Our next drop-off will be on Saturday November 2nd from 8 am until 12 noon.

Buena Vista Township Special Events Committee: “Special” people working hard to bring “Special” Events!! By Dolores Comparri, Chairperson I would like to introduce you to one of the hardest working subcommittees in Buena Vista Township, the Special Events Committee. We are made up of residents who have been appointed by the Township Committee to plan special events for the citizens of Buena Vista Township. We are what our name indicated, “special”. We are dedicated volunteers who go just a bit further to make each event very special. Since the Special Events Committee is mostly funded by donations from area businesses, fundraising is a big part of our job. For these events, we are considerate of the citizens and keep the cost of event tickets at a minimum. The profits from the Annual Valentine Dance held in February and the Annual Comedy Review held in September help defray the costs of the Easter Egg Hunt, Independence Day Festival, Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Holiday Lighting Contest. The Special Events Committee’s biggest fundraising campaign is the Annual Calendar and Municipal Guide that features Township information, important dates and wonderful photographs of towns and people of Buena Vista Township. Every household in Buena Vista Township receives a free copy for their use. The Summer Concert series held in July and August at the Michael Debbie Park are wonderful, free events for all ages. Citizens come out and enjoy a night under the summer skies, dancing, visiting with their neighbors and listening to some of the best musicians the area has to offer. The Special Events Committee also provides light refreshments and delicious homemade and store bought goodies for the patrons. The Special Events Committee is very excited about an event that hasn’t been since 1992; the 2003 Miss Buena Vista Township Pageant. It will be held at The Savoy Inn on February 2, 2003 at 3 pm. Signups will be held at the Municipal Building at 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 21, 2002 and Thursday, December 5, 2002. Girls who are residents of Buena Vista Township and attend a high school grades 9 thru 12 are eligible. Questions can be directed to Dolores Comparri at 856-697-1482 after 7:00 pm. In closing, let me say that I am proud to be a part of Buena Vista Township, as a citizen and as a member of the Special Events Committee. We have evolved into a respected, hard working group and get great pleasure bringing the residents wonderful events throughout the year. So, citizens of Buena Vista Township, why not take advantage of these great events, come out and enjoy the fruits of the committee’s labors. The satisfaction of seeing citizens attending these events and having a great time is the best thank you the Special Events Committee members can have. Happy Holidays to everyone and we hope to see you at the next “special” event!!

Saint Mary’s Grandparents Organization Honored Saint Mary’s Grandparents Organization was recently honored by Buena Vista Township. Once a year every year for over ten years they have cleaned the litter from the sides of Millville Avenue in Milmay that was thrown out of vehicle windows by passing motorists, or purposely deposited by dumpers. The Township has placed Clean Communities Signs on Millville Avenue honoring their commitment to a Clean Environment and willingness to actively get involved with cleaning up an area that becomes unsightly with litter.
Crews are still completing work on the new “Buena Vista Bikeway.” The 3-mile loop in and around the Michael Debbi Park area is part of a network of bikeways that will someday be completed in Atlantic County. Additional stripping, signage and bike racks still need to be completed. When Spring arrives in 2003 residents should really be able to enjoy this additional feature at our Township’s main park.

Pancoast Mill / Main Avenue Project Nears Completion The second layer of asphalt has now been poured between Pancoast Mill Dam and Country Club Lane in the Buena – Richland area. The completion of this section of highway now allows a resident to drive from Route 54 to Pancoast Mill and then onto Richland and Milmay on completely new highway surfaces. The project may have taken a few years, but it is now complete and much safer for our locals. The area around Pancoast Mill Dam has always been dangerous. When the project is completely done new lines will be added to the road surface, along with speed limit signs and guardrail near the lake. The road was also elevated to reduce some of the flooding problems near the lake.
Webelos Scouts of Den Four Take Lesson in Local Government at BVT On Tuesday October 15th the Webelos Scouts of Den Four along with Den Leader Valerie Karwowski met with Mayor Chuck Chiarello and the Township Committee at the Township Caucus Meeting. By attending they were able to complete the Citizen requirement of meeting with government officials and learning about their role in local government. As Webelo scouts who vote for monthly Denner and Assistant Denner of their group they will be able to carry over this experience into realizing the importance of being a voting member of our society. At the Township’s Caucus Meeting they witnessed a local government working with the many skills they learned as Webelo Scouts. These skills include budgeting, the use of in-house talents to defer higher cost of outside contractors, protecting the environment, the approval of spending. The Scouts also learned the roles of Finance, Administration, Township Committee members, Township Clerk and newspaper reporting.
