Public Works Report - September 13, 2002

Drop a frozen turkey off on Monday November 4 at Buena Vista Township Hall by 2 pm.  Help the Community FoodBank Fighting Hunger and Poverty

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is preparing for turkey donations for the upcoming Holidays.  Have an extra turkey or two in the freezer? – Please consider donating to the FoodBank.  We even have a special day that you can drop them at Township Hall.  Drop a frozen turkey off between 9 am and 2 pm on Monday November 4th, 2002 and we will take them to the FoodBank for you!

So many of us take our holiday traditions for granted: trees at Christmas, gifts during Hanukkah, dinner on Thanksgiving.  They give us a feeling of security and hope.  How do you think it would feel if one year your family couldn’t afford those things?  If you were struggling to keep a roof over your head and clothes on your back?  What if you had to go to a community kitchen just to get a hot meal?  Wouldn’t it be comforting to know that someone was there, helping you in your time of need?

That is the mission of the many churches, synagogues, shelters and food pantries who come to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey seeking help to feed the multitude of people who come to them for emergency assistance.  And it’s our mission to supply them with the food they need to give a food basket or serve a meal.

Won’t you help us fulfill our mission of providing both food and hope to those suffering during this time of year, when the rest of us seem to take our good fortune for granted.

If you would like to make a donation to the Community FoodBank please call 609-383-8843.  The Community FoodBank of Southern New Jersey is located on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township just past the Shore Mall across from 84 Lumber.

Mayor Chuck Chiarello and Deputy Mayor Teresa Kelly have been Advisory Board Members since 1996.

Cedar Avenue Bikeway Nearing Completion

The Buena Vista Bikeway has recently been constructed along Cedar Avenue and into the Michael Debbi Park.  There was still work to be completed at press time.  The bikeway is a three-mile loop beginning at Route 40 and going to Tuckahoe Road one way and then back to Route 40 from Tuckahoe Road the other way.  There is an additional path going in and out of the park plus a bike rack that will be installed.

This pathway was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.  It consists of 32,000 feet of long life striping, signage and a bike rack.  The County of Atlantic, N.J.D.O.T., Pinelands Commission and the Township Engineer have approved design and construction.  Eventually this bikeway will be linked to the County’s bikeway and provide access to Mays Landing to the east and the Buena Vista Campgrounds to the west.

Private Well Testing Act – Now in Effect!

The Private Well Testing Act, passed in March, 2001, will take full effect on September 14, 2002.  This law requires sampling of private drinking water wells whenever a property is transferred pursuant to a contract of sale entered into on September 14, 2002 or later.  By March 14, 2004, all landlords of properties on private well water will also be required to test the well water, and to retest every five years.  Buyers, sellers and lessees respectively must be informed of the results.

This is a disclosure law only, and does not create any additional obligations on the part of local officials.  However, county or municipal health officials must be notified by the DEP within five days of any well failure.  It is then up to them to decide what to do in a given situation.  Some well failures may be due to minor contamination problems that effect only the taste of water and are not threats to health, but others may present serious issues.  Local officials may determine to take actions in a given situation ranging from informing residents, to testing other wells, to assisting in the provision of water for those with unsafe wells.  However, local officials are not required under this law and it’s regulations to take any action.  Please remember that the test results provided to the DEP and local health officials are considered confidential under the Private Well Testing Act.

The DEP has set up a website on this law that can be accessed from the main DEP website, www.state.nj.us/dep.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

On September 23 at the televised Township Meeting Mayor Chuck Chiarello and Township Committee proclaimed October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Home should be a place of warmth, unconditional love and tranquility.  The crime of domestic violence violates an individual’s privacy and dignity, security and humanity, due to systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic control and/or abuse including abuse to children and elderly.

The problems of domestic violence are not confined to any group of people, but cut across all economic, racial and societal barriers, and are supported by societal indifference.

 PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

MONTHLY REPORT

September 23, 2002

By: Joan Dickerson, Certified Public Works Director

Public Works has been busy this past month cutting down dead trees in our right-of-ways.  We have also trimmed brush around signs posts, clipped over hanging branches and weed wacked around signs, poles and guardrails.
We finished a round of mowing and also used the boom arm mower to mow areas that could not be done with the regular mower.

We hung the flags up for the Labor Day Weekend and left them up until after September 11th to commemorate the terrorist attacks on our country.

Public Works assisted with the layout of new light poles at the Michael Debbi Park.  The poles are now in place.  The lights and poles at Quigley Park are now in place and will soon be connected to power.

We have kept the Parks mowed and cleaned.  The football teams and cheerleaders as well as tennis and hockey groups are utilizing the Michael Debbi Park now.

We have replaced several damaged signs throughout the township and have finished striping the school crosswalks and bus stops.

At September’s Drop-Off we took in approximately 686 lbs of metal, 11 yards of brush, 7 bags of leaves, 123 gallons of oil, 15 tires and a few cans, bottles and cardboards.  We also took in 50 cans of old paint.

Our next Drop-Off will be held on Saturday, October 5th from 8:00 am to noon.
