The Atlantic County Department of Public Health and the Atlantic County Mosquito Control Unit was in attendance at our televised Township Meeting on August 26, 2002. A presentation was made and a short film was shown. It can be seen on Cable TV Channel 13 during our current Township Meeting. Below is some information on West Nile Virus from a brochure which is also available at the Buena Vista Township Building.
What is West Nile Virus? Where did it come from? West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus commonly found in Africa, West Asia and the Middle East. It was first identified in the United States in August of 1999 in New York State. How do people get West Nile Virus? People become infected with West Vile Virus from the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by biting birds which have previously been infected with WNV. There is no evidence that a person can get the virus from handling infected birds. What are the symptoms of West Nile Virus? Most infections are mild. Symptoms may include fever, headache, body aches, skin rashes and swollen lymph glands. When more severe illness occurs, symptoms range from fever, rash and headache to meningitis, encephalitis, coma and, on rare occasions, death. Who is at risk for getting West Nile Virus? Risk among individuals in the general population is very low. However, people over the age of 50 and those with weak immune systems are at greater risk for more serious illness. How is it treated? There is no specific treatment for West Nile Virus, nor is there a vaccine. Most people recover completely within two weeks. In more severe infections, intensive supportive therapy may be needed. Can birds or other animals get West Nile Virus? Crows, gulls, ducks, chickens, hawks, and horses are among animals that are known to harbor West Nile Virus. But only a few species actually show symptoms, and only a few have enough virus in their blood to allow mosquitoes that feed on them to become infected. In a limited number of studies on domestic animals, infected dogs showed minimal to no symptoms. WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE MY RISK OF BECOMING INFECTED WITH WEST NILE VIRUS? To reduce the annoyance of mosquito bites and prevent transmission of WNV and other mosquito-borne infections, some common sense measures can be taken, including: · Reduce mosquito breeding on your property by eliminating standing water that collects in boats, buckets, tires, flower pots and other containers. · Clean clogged roof gutters. · Empty plastic pools when not in use and drain swimming pool covers. · Change water in bird baths weekly, and flush sump pits. · Stock ornamental ponds with goldfish. · Check and repair screens and screen doors. · Limit outdoor activity during dusk, dawn, and early evening when mosquitoes are most active. · Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks when you are outdoors. Avoid areas with heavy underbrush and trees. · Using insect repellents that contain 20-30% DEET can be very effective in preventing insect bites. Read the product label carefully. Insect repellents such as those that contain DEET are not to be applied to bare skin. Consult with your child’s doctor prior to using on children. Do not use insect repellents on children less than three years old. Township Orders New Leaf Collection Tractor Buena Vista Township is anticipating receipt of a leaf collection device called the Trackless Leaf Machine by early November. Until the schedule is announced Township residents in our normal leaf collection areas must continue to bag leaves as they always have. When the new leaf collection device is received the Township plans to announce a schedule for collection dates in various sections of our community. The new tractor-like device picks leaves off the streets and turns it into mulch shooting it into a dump truck. It has been ten years since the Township had a leaf collection machine. The old type machine used to jam up and break down more times then not. Since 1993 leaves have been bagged by our residents. More details will be in our next issue of the “Buena Vista Township News”.

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENTMONTHLY REPORT August 22, 2002 By: Joan Dickerson, Certified Public Works Director This month the Public Works Department put water protection stain on the deck and outdoor steps around the King Center. We also assisted the schools by helping them place mulch around their playground areas.
Parks and Public Works employees assisted with the concert series in the park. They put up chairs, kept the area clean and directed traffic for parking. Football and Cheerleading practice has now started and the Michael Debbi Park is a very busy place. We have also recently purchased a portable dance floor which we will be setting up for next years concerts. The Public Works Department collects yard waste on Fridays. The Atlantic County Utilities Authority will be back collecting yard waste on recycling Fridays starting September 13th in designated areas. Anyone putting out yard waste in other areas of the Township should call Public Works to be put on the schedule. Brush must be cut no longer than 4 feet, bundled and tied. Leaves need to be put in bags. The drought and heat have caused some trees to fall and branches to break off. Every week we have had a few to clean up. Deer are also very active right now. They are looking for moisture and several have been hit on our roadways more than usual. Please be careful when driving as they pop out on the roads day and night. Public Works has put stop signs at the intersection of Woodlawn and Evergreen to slow down speeders in the area. This intersection is now a three (3) way stop. We have been doing maintenance on all our vehicles and sending some out for necessary repairs. At the August Recycling Drop off we collected 300 lbs. of metal, 34 yards of brush, 8 bags of leaves, 158 gallons of used motor oil, 5 tires and 6 batteries. We took in a few cans and bottles and some cardboard as well as 20 cans of old paint. The next recycling drop off will be on September 7th from 8 am to 12 noon at the Public Works yard. The Atlantic County Utilities Authority will be holding a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day at the Hammonton Public Works Yard on September 28th from 9 am to 2 pm. For more information please contact the Atlantic County Utilities Authority at 1-800-613-2282. You may drop off old propane tanks from gas grills at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority site during their normal business hours. There will be a $5.00 per tank charge for disposal.
