John Van Street Awarded Buena Vista Township’s 2002 Outstanding Senior Citizen Volunteer

On May 22, 2002, the Atlantic County Division of Intergenerational Services hosted an awards luncheon at the Buena Outreach in Minotola.  This year’s 2002 Outstanding Senior Citizen Volunteer for Buena Vista Township award was given to John Van Street of Cranberry Run.

Mr. Van Street was honored for his outstanding service as President of the Cranberry Run Civic and Social Association,  as well as his membership in the choir and the hand bell group at the Cranberry Run Senior Mobile Park. John’s  membership in the First Baptist Church of Clayton where he served as Sunday School Director and Chairman of the Elders plus his efforts in visiting patients at the hospital also led to this honor.

Mr. Van Street also served our country in the US Army and retired after 23 years.  He then was employed by National Steel Products.  His devotion to our community and service to our country were duly noted.

Deputy Mayor Teresa Kelly presented Mr. Van Street with the “Outstanding Senior of the Year” plaque from Buena Vista.  Mike Sherman representing Atlantic County also made a presentation.  Mr. and Mrs. Van Street recently appeared at the May 28th televised Township meeting to note his achievement.

Buena Vista Township Route 40 Re-Construction

The Township Committee recently received great news! The New Jersey Department of Transportation is currently preparing construction contract documents for Route 40 from Mile Post 32.60 to Mile Post 43.60 in Buena Borough, Buena Vista Township and Hamilton Township in Atlantic County.  This contract has been tentatively scheduled for construction during the 2002 summer/fall season pending appropriate funding.

The scope of this project consists of milling the roadway and resurfacing with bituminous concrete.  It is also proposed to reconstruct deteriorated curb sections with substandard curb reveal along with construction of handicapped curb ramps, where applicable.  Existing low inlets and manholes will be raised.

The intent of this project is geared toward addressing ride quality and extending pavement life.

New Jersey Drought Update – Latest Development

DEP Commissioner Bradley Campbell issued Administrative Order #2002-15 to allow limited lawn watering during a trial period.  Although April and May showers have helped to raise reservoir levels, the State remains in a drought emergency.  The trial period is effective until June 28th, at which time, the DEP will re-evaluate our water situation.

Effective immediately and applicable to municipalities in the coastal south, southwest and northwest regions of the State, lawn watering, is allowed two days per week using an odd/even schedule.

Example:

Odd numbered street addresses….Tuesday and Thursday

Even numbered street addresses…Wednesday and Friday

Lawn watering is limited to 45 minutes per area.

New Jersey is in the worst drought in State history.  Do your part in saving our water.  Every drop does count.  For more information, please see the State’s drought website, www.njdrought.org, or call the NJ Drought Hotline at 1-800-4ITS-DRY (1-800-448-7379).

Your efforts to assist are greatly appreciated.
