Safe Kids Playground Grant Is A Reality John Quigley Park To Receive Major ImprovementThe Township was awarded a Safe Kids Playground Grant for improvements to the playground portion of the John Quigley Park in Collings Lakes. At the Township meeting on Monday, March 11, 2002 a resolution was passed to purchase the new playground equipment with installation under a state contract. The Equipment is on order and should be delivered and installed within the next sixty days. Just in time for summer fun for the kids. The equipment consists of a configuration containing multiple activities and levels. There is a slide, rock-climbing wall, a triple slide and several climbing configurations. The play unit is handicap accessible and will be painted in the Township colors of red, white and blue.
Mass held at St. Mary’s Church of East Vineland to Honor Volunteers The East Vineland Volunteer Fire Company Station 12-2 and BVT EMS Squad 12-3 honored all Fire, Rescue and EMS Personnel along with their families at a “Mass of Volunteerism”. A crowd of over 100 attended the mass that was held at St. Mary’s Church of East Vineland on Union Road at 12:00 noon on Sunday, March 10, 2002. All Chief’s present brought their active helmets to represent their company or squad and they were placed on the altar for a blessing during mass. Father Onufer and Mayor Chuck Chiarello gave volunteer pins to the all the firefighters, EMS’s, Rescue and family members who were in attendance. Assemblyman Jeff VanDrew, Deputy Mayor Teresa Kelly and Committeewoman Sue Barber also attended. A luncheon reception followed at the St. Mary’s School. Special thanks to Pam and Allan Bylone for their planning efforts along with all who played a role in this special community event.
Local Celebration of African American History Honors Ms. Lucille Brown and Mr. Calvin Williams On Sunday, February 24, 2002 at the First Baptist Church of Richland hosted the Ninth Annual Richland Community Cultural Celebration as a part of African American History Month. Special guest Ms. Lucille Brown, age 94, was the Township’s first African American Teacher. She taught for 39 years in the Township. She was joined by former students from various generations who had been educated by her. They came to the church to salute her and take a group photo with her. The students were recognized by John Lloyd Sr. former student and Newtonville resident. Mr. Lloyd helped organize the event along with Reverend David Mallory and Mayor Chuck Chiarello. Mayor Chiarello presented Ms. Brown with an Outstanding Citizenship Award from the Township for her years of dedicated service. Also in attendance were Deputy Mayor Teresa Kelly, Committeeman Michael Rivera and Committeewomen Sue Barber. The second honored guest was Mr. Calvin Williams, who was raised in Richland and attended Buena Vista Township Schools. Mr. Williams has been cited by many State and Federal dignitaries and leaders, for his outstanding involvement in community affairs and youth development for over thirty years. Mayor Chuck Chiarello also presented Mr. Williams with an Outstanding Citizenship Award. After the celebration an
authentic African American dinner was served from Aunt Pearl’s Place, which is
operated by the Guilford family. For old times sake Ms. Lucille Brown was also
taken to the Newtonville School for a visit by some of her former students. It
was a wonderful day!
The First Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Newtonville celebrated it’s grand opening and 56th Anniversary on Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10. On Saturday, March 10 members of the congregation marched from 6th Road to the church lead by a drum corps, flags and a state police escort. Upon arrival at the church Pastor Maurice Taylor used a large pair of scissors to cut the ribbon along with Mayor Chuck Chiarello, Committeewoman Sue Barber and church leaders. This allowed for the opening of the new doomed shaped church facility. At 11:00 am a crowd estimated at about 300 participated in the opening service for the new church. Greetings and remarks were made by Mayor Chuck Chiarello, who also gave a Proclamation to Pastor Maurice Taylor. The Buena Vista Township Committee proudly saluted the church leadership and members of the congregation for their efforts of making this dream possible. Also in attendance was Deputy Mayor Teresa Kelly.
Buena Vista Township EMS held Second Annual Installation Dinner BVT EMS held it’s Second Annual Installation Dinner at the Merighi’s Savoy Inn on Saturday, February 23, 2002. Betty Merighi hosted the program. Chief Wayne Corsiglia discussed the activities of the squad in the past year. Members of the squad were recognized for their efforts and plaques were given for mutual aid to other rescue squads and fire companies. The entire Township Committee was present. The officers for 2002 were installed. The Trustees are: Wayne Corsiglia, Terri Crites, Carlo Merighi, Karl Molinelli, Lonnie Ricci and Ron Ruggeri. The Administrative Officers are: President Allan Bylone, Vice-President Lonnie Ricci, Secretary Eileen Ruggeri and Treasurer Betty Merighi. The Line Officers are: Chief Wayne Corsiglia, Captain Butch Trumbauer, Lieutenant Susan Mesiano, Lieutenant II Tony Bylone and Training Officer Debbie Bell.
BVT Celebrates Read Across America Day Read Across America is an annual celebration of reading that culminates on March 1 in schools across New Jersey. Students, parents, and community members participated in various events organized by local schools. Mrs. Linda J. Di-Pasquale-Morello of the John C. Milanesi School invited Mayor Chuck Chiarello to visit her kindergarten class (K-A) and read to the students. On Thursday, March 7, Mayor Chiarello read a book on the life of George Gershwin. Mrs. Morello also played Gershwin music for the students. It was evident that there are many budding young musicians coming along in the next few years.
Buena Vista Exchange Club Plans St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast The Buena Vista Exchange Club will be holding a St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast on Sunday, March 17, 2002. Breakfast is from 7:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Buena Senior Center (Central Avenue, Minotola). All proceeds will be donated to the local civic organizations. Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased at the door.
Celebration Held for Charlie Bylone A celebration was held for Charles Bylone on Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Merighi’s Savoy Inn in Vineland. Mr. Bylone was recognized for his many years of dedicated service as President and Director of the Vineland Cooperative Produce Auction (since 1954). Mr. Bylone put in countless hours of service to the public, Agricultural Community and was Buena Vista Township Clerk/Administrator for 25 years. Mayor Chuck Chiarello presented Charles Bylone with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” Plaque. Assemblyman Jeff VanDrew presented Mr. Bylone with a proclamation from Governor’s James E. McGreevey. Assemblyman Nick Asselta presented greetings from the Senate and Assembly as well as Congressman Frank LoBiondo. All members of the Buena Vista Township were in attendance. The event was organized by Peter Bylone who is a member of the Township Committee and also Charlie’s son. Charlie Bylone retired from the Vineland Cooperative Produce Auction last year. Former New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Art Brown hosted the festivities.
Collings Lakes Ambulance Association Youth Program Applauded The Collings Lakes Ambulance Association Youth Program has recognized the children who have become AED/CPR certified. These children have put a lot of time and effort into this achievement. At the Buena Vista Township Meeting held on Monday, February 25, 2002 Deputy Mayor Teresa Kelly presented these children with “Making Buena Vista Proud Awards” on behalf of the Committee. The Youth Program is a great way to inspire our young people to get involved with the squad now to train for becoming EMT’s in the years to come. Crafters/Attic Treasures Wanted for Independence Day Celebration BVT will hold it’s 14th Annual Independence Day Festival on Sunday, July 7, 2002 (rain date July 14th) at the Michael Debbi Park, Richland. Township Applies For Richland Corridor Project Grant, TEA-21 The Township has once again applied for the TEA-21 grant in an effort to make significant improvements to the downtown area of Richland along US Route 40 between Main and Cedar Avenues. The intent of the project is to identify the Richland area along US Route 40 as a “Town Center” with a historic feel to it while creating safe pedestrian movement through the use of concrete curbing, decorative sidewalks, shade trees, “old time” lighting and benches. The project would also include the construction of an attractive bus stop and parking at the intersection of US Route 40 and Main Avenue. This bus stop would include the construction of a decorative shelter for tourists and commuters which will include historic plaques reviewing the history of Buena Vista Township and the Richland area.

Township Performs Well In Insurance Competition by Ron Trebing, Buena Vista Township, AdministratorThe 13th Annual Safety Kickoff Breakfast, sponsored by Buena Vista Township’s insurer, the Atlantic County Municipal Joint Insurance Fund (JIF) was held on February 14, 2002. Buena Vista Township received two awards this year. The Township will receive a $1,000 Safety Incentive Award and a $2,108 Optional Safety Award. In addition, the Township received recognition for its improved employee “lost time” record that beat the JIF’s average in 2001. Congratulations to all the Buena Vista employees who made this possible. In attendance at the breakfast were Township Administrator Ron Trebing, Deputy Administrator Dawn Scott, Public Works Director Joan Dickerson, Public Works Safety Coordinator Keith Dorris and Mayor Chuck Chiarello.
