 TownNet coming to Buena Vista

Atlantic County Government has established a TownNet Project which offers high speed internet and e-mail to municipalities in Atlantic County.  Through a grant funded by the State of New Jersey the County has purchased the necessary equipment for municipalities to connect their local networks to the TownNet.  TownNet will allow all computers in the municipal building to be connected to the internet.  It will also provide the ability for all computers to connect and operate at the same time.  By connecting to the TownNet a savings will be realized by our Community.  In addition, our monthly costs will not change even with twenty-four hour connection, seven days a week.

Buena Regional High School Mock Trial

By Tobin Nilsen

On the night of June 23, 2001, Eileen Melon and her two children died in a horrible traffic accident on Interstate 295 near the Metropolitan Mall area.

Accident or an act of road rage?  The State has charged Pat Patrecca with causing the accident.  Mr. Patrecca says he didn’t do it and he is depending on his team of defense lawyers to clear him of the charges.  The State believes Mr. Patrecca should be convicted and has assigned two top prosecutors to the case.

The above event really didn’t happen but is being acted out by small groups of high school students all over the State of New Jersey.  In fact, Buena High School participated for the third straight year in the “Mock Trial” event under the able direction of teacher/coach Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Klinglesmith.

Mrs. Klinglesmith along with the assistance of three local attorneys helped ten Buena High School students prepare for trial.  Mock Trial isn’t a play or skit, it’s really an enactment of a real trial performed pursuant to “Mock Trial” rules which closely resemble actual court rules.

The Buena High School students who participated in the event experienced first-hand what it’s like to actually present a case to jurors (fellow students) while being supervised and critiqued by judges (local attorneys) in real court rooms (civil courthouse in Atlantic City) while competing against other Atlantic County teams.  The eventual winning team from Atlantic County will square off against the winner from another county.

This year Buena High School performed excellently and advanced to the 2nd round of competition.  Everyone who participated learned a lot and had a lot of fun.  It’s not too early to start thinking about next year!
