27, 2001Residents: Intersection is magnet for accidentsBy James P. Quaranta; jquaranta@thedailyjournal.com
But following a motor vehicle accident at the intersection Saturday, the owner of the duplex is worried that his tenants' luck may be running out. "I'm concerned for the safety of my tenants," said Jerry Covella of Vineland, the owner of the property. "Without the mound, that car would have hit the house and possibly killed the tenants," said Covella, who wants additional safety measures taken to protect the building. Saturday's wreck marked the sixth time in two years that a car has crashed into the dirt embankment. This time the vehicle came to rest only 15 feet from the duplex. Covella said he believes a flashing light or a guardrail or both at the intersection could eliminate the danger to the dwelling. The 5-by-60 foot embankment was bulit by the property's previous owner, Covella said. At 2:40 a.m. Saturday, a 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier knocked down a traffic signpost and slammed into the embankment, according to the State Police. John Lieskie Jr., 27, of the 3000 block of Swan Drive, Vineland, was listed in critical condition at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center in Camden on Wednesday. Lieskie was traveling south on Central Avenue when his car failed to stop for a stop sign, crossed Oak Road and hit the embankment causing the car to flip, police said. Passing motorists said it appeared the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. No one in Atlantic County government could be reached for comment Wednesday, but Buena Vista Township Mayor Chuck Chiarello said he was concerned about the safety of residents in the immediate area. "At the intersection, both roads are controlled by the county," Chiarello said. "I'll instruct the township administrator to send a letter to county officials on behalf of the Buena Vista Township Committee asking that a review of the safety devices be conducted," he said. Last year, as part of a Central Avenue repaving project, several trees were removed that the county believed were obstructing motorists' view of the intersection, Chiarello said. |
