BVT Honors Terror Attack Victims with American Pride Day
Community members from Buena Vista Township congregated Sunday, October 7, 2001 to celebrate American Pride Day at Michael Debbi Park in Richland.
Buena Vista Township’s Special Events Committee hosted the event. "The purpose of this event was to bring the community together to show unity and support for the victims of the recent terrorist attacks in our country and most importantly, to celebrate being proud Americans," said Dolores Comparri, Chairperson of the Special Events Committee.
A special program was held, which included special presentations from various clergy members, a ceremony to recognize EMS workers and volunteer firefighters, along with the musical talent from local residents. A captivating rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" was performed by Newtonville resident, Eugene Moore. The program ended with a powerful performance of "God Bless America" sung by Ashley Fortunato, age 8, a soloist at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.
A candlelight vigil sponsored by the Collings Lakes Ambulance Association was also held to unite the communities and remember the lives that have been lost due to the September 11, 2001 tragedy.
Other special activities included a child safety seat demonstration provided by the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Department, a coloring contest, face painting, hay rides, food, beverages and a beautiful exhibit that was displayed by the Buena Historical Society depicting the history of the American Flag, which included photos of veterans from Buena and Buena Vista dating back to World War I.
Julie Akers from the Environmental Commission thrilled the young people with custom "Apple People" creations. Fire companies and ambulance squads displayed their equipment. The East Vineland Volunteer Fire Company featured a small house that the kids could practice their use of a fire hose.
Reverend David Mallory of the First Baptist Church of Richland presented a sermon entitled "A New Day of Infamy" and Reverend William Cowherd offered a prayer.
Reverend Kenneth W. Albert, Jr. from The Abundant Life Church provided words of encouragement and presented The First Prayer in Congress, September 1774, In Carpenters Hall Philadelphia to Mayor Chuck Chiarello, Deputy Mayor Teresa Kelly and the Kindest Town in New Jersey, Buena Vista Township, with the historical artwork. The beautiful artwork will be on display in the Buena Vista Township Municipal building for the entire community to view.
The program also included a special reading by Susan Mesiano in recognition of the EMS Volunteers and "A Fireman’s Prayer" that was read by long-time East Vineland Fire Commissioner, Charles Bylone. Deputy Mayor Teresa Kelly read a tribute to the firefighters. Performances by the Cleary Middle School Dance Team, Buena Regional High School and Buena Braves Cheerleaders and the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Center Drill Team capped off the day.
We would like to give a special "Thank You" to ALL of the community members who participated in "American Pride Day". The true spirit, patriotism and caring that was exhibited by all participants shined through with a brilliance that epitomizes "American Pride". And, as proud Americans we will use that pride to face any adversities that lie ahead.
